Task 1.
Read the text below to get the general idea:
It seems that disability, although a very important topic for modern societies, is mostly discussed either by those who are directly affected by some kind of physical or psychological impairment or by their closest relatives and families, who struggle every day to improve the living conditions of those in need. The issue is rarely brought into the public opinion in terms of working opportunities for disabled people.
In Poland, for example, the situation of disabled workers is worse than in other European countries. In 2007, for instance, the inactivity rates of Polish employees with disabilities were reported as much higher than those of other workers. It was clearly pointed out that, although their share in the working age population was 10 %, their share in employment was less than 4 percent. Statistics clearly show that, in most cases, the disabled either remain unemployed or are supported by their parents or spouses. It means that the entire economy is deprived of their potential, productivity and creativity, since being handicapped does not necessarily imply that one cannot have a career, does it? Figures indicate that many people with slight physical impairments, minor dysfunctions, less serious health conditions, or little activity limitations are in fact able to work and do the job, at least part-time or from home.
It does not take much effort for a company to make a few necessary alterations or adjustments to enable disabled employees to perform their duties successfully, since only 5% of them actually use a wheelchair.
‘’Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you are needed by someone’’ (Martina Navratilova).
