Onboarding, also known as organizational socialization, refers to the processes of adaptation and assimilation of new employees into the organization. Various procedures and techniques may be used to make the transition period to the new company as effective as possible. For instance, newcomers may undergo internal training or participate in interactive meetings and informal lectures, or they may be asked to perform certain job-related tasks.
 
Since the first impression really matters, it is vital to ensure that new hires are welcomed accordingly, feel comfortable in their workplace and feel the support from their immediate supervisors. Therefore, it is advisable to follow some key steps to make the first onboarding week the most pleasant experience the hires have ever had.
 
Here is the set of most useful and best practices for employee oboarding during the first week:
1. prepare an agenda for your new employee’s week – write it down in advance to save time and avoid misunderstandings,
2. create a comfortable workstation for your new staff member – organize their desk beforehand to make them feel relaxed and confident,
3. provide new employees with a warm welcome or a small gift – greet new colleagues wholeheartedly and place some branded materials on their workstations,
4. send out helpful information and include any details which might be needed, just to minimize the initial stress,
5. offer thorough assistance, full guidance or necessary training – conduct a tour of the office, introduce people in person, give detailed information and propose coaching or mentoring,
6. discuss important work processes and overall duties – inform about dress code, suitable rules and regulations,
7. allow for job shadowing – let your new hire shadow other workers to see how they work.
 
Onboarding tactics will enable newcomers to adjust to an organization quicker and acclimate to a new environment in a satisfying way. New hires will certainly become more productive the sooner they complete their orientation period successfully in the new place of work.
