Task 1.
Read the text below to get the general idea:

Job or performance appraisals are common in most companies and they are conducted on a regular basis, usually at the end of a year. Employees are evaluated by their managers or supervisors but only a few inferiors look forward to their annual job assessments. Many companies have lengthy forms to be filled in both by the employees and employers alike. Such documents might include a self-evaluation sheet and they should be completed before the appraisal meeting. Some people find it particularly difficult to objectively asses their own work, while others are afraid of expressing their thoughts and opinions in writing. Realizing the fact that the result of the performance evaluation might influence their future career, job contract or payment conditions, employees tend to be scared of their yearly reviews.
A performance appraisal may either take the form of a relaxed discussion or of a formal interview. The main goal, however, is to measure and assess an employee’s level of performance during the reviewed period. In addition, performance reviews can also determine who needs training, who will get promoted (or demoted), or who will be retained (or even fired). It is said that employee evaluations provide detailed information about an individual employee’s productivity in relation to the company’s objectives. It seems that appraisals not only measure skills but accomplishments (and failures) too. They are supposed to provide a deep insight into the overall knowledge about each employee, their abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, everybody should receive a thorough and accurate appraisal as well as a set of constructive suggestions how to perform better in the company. Finally, top performers, and their contributions to the company’s profits, should be appreciated and rewarded accordingly.
