The topic for today is ‘’ Christmas’’.
Task 1
Read the text below to get the general idea:
Band Aid 30 is the 2014 incarnation of the charity supergroup Band Aid, which was announced by Bob Geldof and Midge Urge on 10 November 2014. This time the famous song ‘’Do they know it’s Christmas?’’ will again be used (for the fourth time) to raise money in a good cause, e.g. in the fight against the Ebola virus in Western Africa.
The song was first released in 1984 and raised almost 8m pounds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Thirty years ago, a group of most splendid pop artists, including Bono, George Michael, Sting and Boy George, took part in the Band Aid project and recorded the song together for the first time. The new version also features a team of excellent stage performers such as Bono, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, One Direction and Adele. The recording took place in the same studio in Notting Hill, London, which was used for the original track. This time the lyrics were slightly changed to reflect the Ebola crisis.
The cost of download will be 99p and the CD will be sold for 4 pounds. It has also been confirmed that the VAT will be waived and the entire sum collected by the song will be given for the cause. On 18 November 2014, the BBC reported more than 206,000 copies sold. Bob Geldof endorsed people to buy the song by saying: ‘’It doesn’t matter if you hate this song or you don’t like the song, you have to buy this thing’’. ‘’I really urge everyone.’’ ‘’It’s a couple of quid. It’s a great thing to do at Christmas’’.
