Task 1.
Read the text below to get the general idea:

Nowadays coaching and mentoring have become very popular forms of informal training and personal development in business. Although the two processes may share some similarities at first sight, in fact they differ considerably in merits. Experts differentiate a few key areas which they believe are most important.
Generally speaking, mentoring is mainly focused on personal development as such while coaching is performance driven. The latter therefore involves enhancing current skills or acquiring new abilities in order to do the job effectively and improve company results. On the contrary, mentoring is designed to retain talented people within the organization.
Additionally, coaching is said to have a certain duration hence mentoring is seen as a long time relationship between a mentor and a mentee. Coaching usually lasts for as long as it is needed to complete a task, but establishing a successful mentoring bond may take a year or even longer. Therefore, mentoring programmes are viewed more like career trainings for elites, for a selected few in a company, rather than regular informal courses.
Moreover, coaching is more structured in nature than mentoring. Meetings are always scheduled on a regular basis while in mentoring sessions are planned upon request, when they are needed by the mentee.
Finally, the mentor is selected from senior staff members, he has to be a very experienced person in an organization who has know-how and likes sharing knowledge. On the contrary, the coach can be an independent external professional who does not need to know the coachee’s work background to achieve competence goals.
Summing up, when a company seeks to develop specific competences of its employees it should definitely consider coaching. If it desires to create strong leaders as a part of succession planning for instance, mentoring will prove to be the best option.
